We’ve been around the web to know that not everybody gets how to navigate cPanel or upload files using FTP. One click installations are great if you know how to log into cPanel, locate the installer like Fantastico, click the WordPress install and hope and pray that it installs correctly. If all goes as planned you will get the generic template and the hello world post. Then you get to find a theme and FTP into the server to load the theme into the correct file directory. Provided your file permissions are set correctly, you can install a new theme. And then onto locating plugins and installing them hoping they work and don’t conflict with anything. And on, and on, and on…

Wordpress is one of the most widely used blogging platforms and content management systems available. Even though it does not take much to get WordPress installed and running there still are a number of steps you should take to get the most out of your New WordPress Installation.
1. Update your User Profile … Go to Users > Your Profile
Change your password
Many WordPress installations are done using a random password generator or a generic password. The randomly generated passwords can be pretty secure when using a combination of numbers and uppercase and lowercase letters but can be a bit difficult to remember. A generic password can be very simple like admin, WordPress, etc. and not very secure as they are simple words and easily guessed.
You can change the password to a more secure and easier to remember password. Try to use a combination of numbers and uppercase and lowercase letters. You can mix and match dates with names or words that have meaning to you. Just remember the more random the password is the more secure it will be.
Fill in your Name, Contact and About Yourself Information.
You can fill in any of the Name, Contact and Personal Information you may want to share with visitors of your site.
2. Add Users … Go to Users > Add New
You may want to add additional users that will contribute content and posts to your WordPress site. You can select individual roles for each additional account you create.
Visit: http://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities to better understand the roles and their capabilities.
3. Set your Permalinks Structure … Go to Settings > Permalinks
By default WordPress uses URLs which have question marks and numbers in them ( www.yourdomain.com/?p=123 ), however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward-compatibility of your links as well as helping to improve your sites SEO.
Recommended: Set Custom Structure to /%category%/%postname%/ leave Category Base and Tag Base empty.
Visit: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks to see what tags are available.
4. Configure your General Settings … Go to Settings > General
You may want to configure your Site Title and be sure to enter a Tagline for your site. Double check that your notification E-mail Address is correct and that your site is using the right Time zone. You can also configure the way the Date and Time is displayed on your site.
5. Configure your Privacy Settings … Go to Settings > Privacy
Set your sites visibility by allowing your site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archive.
6. Select your WordPress Theme … Go to Appearance > Themes
Select a theme that you feel will help you to express your message or work well with your business or brand. By default, WordPress will come with only one or two themes pre-installed. You may want to install and activate a new WordPress Theme from one of the thousands of free or paid WordPress Themes available online. Make sure the theme you use is compatible with the version of WordPress you are using.
